Shaking Intensity of Weak or Greater

Three earthquakes, including one of the strongest ever to hit the region, struck off the coast of New Zealand on Friday, triggering a tsunami.

The magnitude-6.1 quake struck near Wellington at 8 p.m. on Wednesday local time, according to New Zealand's earthquake monitoring agency. A magnitude-6 earthquake has struck in the center of New Zealand's South Island, government seismic monitor GeoNet says, but initial reports indicate no major damage.
