27 Million Without Power

Beryl Regains Hurricane Strength

Hurricane Beryl has made landfall on the Gulf Coast of Texas near Matagorda, the US National Hurricane Center said on Monday. The last hurricane to make landfall in Texas was in 2021 Hurricane Nicholas, a Category 1 with 75 mph winds that made landfall in east Matagorda.

Power has been knocked out to more than 27 million customers in Texas as Hurricane Beryl slams the state. CenterPoint Energy expects to restore power to 1 million customers in Texas impacted by Hurricane Beryl by the end of Wednesday, the provider.

Beryl once a hurricane and now a tropical storm is expected to regain hurricane strength before it hits the south Texas coast late Sunday or Monday.
